We Have Lost The Pelicans Great British Humour Mystery Big Birds edition by Paul Mathews Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I actually liked this better than the first book, We Have Lost The President. They're not as funny to me as the titles sound, but it is a fun read, and Paul Matthews writes his main characters well enough that you start to feel like you know them.
As a novel, it's a bit of slapstick comedy. It's premise (originally explaned in "The President is Missing" is entertaining Suppose that a revolution has thrown royalty out of Britain. It is now a republic, with an elected president and 50 appointed vice presidents. The characters and plot are entertaining enough, but they are kind of thin.
Oh no. Disaster has struck as the day approaches for President Zayn Winner to present his pelican flag by the lake where many beautiful Pelicans live. The only problem is is that the Pelicans have disappeared. It's a race against the clock as Howie Pond searches for answers before the strike of 6 pm on the day he is to be married to his lovely Brit. He and President Winner do find themselves in a wee bit of a pickle as Howie's wedding hour draws closer. Read this new second book by Paul Mathews. It has all the hilarity and suspense as the first!
The second book in the series ... and another quick, enjoyable read. Mr. Matthews is an insightful writer that is able to "flavor" his books with just the right amount of British humor. Even though the book was written "across the pond" those in the New States will love it just the same. Do yourself a favor and purchase a copy for a refreshing, enjoyable read on your commute! It will brighten your day and leave you smiling. Thanks again Mr. Matthews for another hidden gem!
I liked the "we have lost" series. I purchased all the books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I related to Howie Pond and found him to be a believable character. The humor was witty, funny, tongue in cheek, with some underlying satire. The plot was intriguing and the additional characters added fullness to the story. The humor is subtle and the character is reasonably predictable. It is a bit better if you follow the series. As for Howie liking donuts too much, he is not alone. My sweeties eyes glaze over just thinking of a donut.
This was a really fun and funny book with a plot line that kept me pretty intrigued from beginning to end. The characters are well developed and there is a genuine mystery involved. This is a really good book with a good sense of British humor. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The only comment I would give a potential reader is due to the promotion I received on my , I mistakenly thought this to be the first book in the series. For the most part it stands alone and I had no problem following the plot, but there were allusions to the first book that made me wish I had read We Have Lost the President first. Oh well, I'll pick that up next
I have read all three of the "We Have Lost the ..." books, and they started out good and are getting better. The British willingness to make gentle fun of themselves, their government, and their conventions is refreshing and shows a healthy national self confidence. I wish we still had that here in the "New States". The characters are 3-dimensional, well developed, likable and consistent throughout. The story lines are fun, and the humor will make you laugh out loud at times. I am waiting for #4. Thank you, Mr. Mathews.
