Asexuality (an orientation where someone does not experience sexual attraction) is widely misunderstood. Or worse ignored. Until it becomes common knowledge that asexuality exists as a sexual orientation, then people who DO relate on the spectrum will continue to struggle internally (feeling alone, broken, or flawed) and externally (in relationships, and life in general).

The Lonely Ace of Hearts begins with a general introduction about asexuality as an orientation, debunking the most common myths, and then guides readers through the most common struggles. Defining and Understanding Your Identity. Achieving Self-Acceptance. Coming Out to Friends & Family. (Or, not.) Dealing with Loneliness. Then (and only then) can we work on the struggles with Love, Dating, Sex, and Relationships.

This book is not about "dealing with life as an asexual"... it's is about (ultimately) Embracing the Asexual Identity.

The Lonely Ace of Hearts A Journey to Embracing the Asexual Identity eBook Caryn Purdy

Caryn Purdy wrote a great book, one that should be read by everyone. First, she's funny, the book has enough humor in it to keep you entertained while dealing with a serious subject. That keeps the topics from getting too weighted down and keeps them becoming too clinical. Second, some of the things she deals with, such as being happy single and being happy with yourself, are topics everyone can relate to no matter your sexuality or relationship status. She makes good logical points when dealing with things like who to tell, what to tell them, dating, accepting yourself, and how to be friends to an ace person and how to provide support. The things not to say are given just as much emphasis as the things to say. Purdy doesn't play psychologist, this isn't a book for self diagnosis, but to help you accept who you are and be happy with that decision once you come to it.

The Lonely Ace of Hearts A Journey to Embracing the Asexual Identity eBook Caryn Purdy Reviews

I myself am an aromantic asexual and can personally identify with much of this book. Its not just for those like me its also for anyone who wants to learn about asexuality. It addressed subjects ranging from common pitfalls, the asexual spectrum, misunderstandings, communitys,to being comfortable with who you are.
I had a lot of hopes for this book. I needed it to feed my thirst for information. It fell far short. First of all, content The entire book is shallow and lacks depth of any kind. The first third of the book is full of information you can find online in 30 minutes for free. The next third of the book is full of common sense that did not need to be written. The last third of the book assumes that you want to be in a relationship with someone. The final three pages assumes the book was much more than it is and tries to imply that it has helped you on a journey. I can assure you that this book took me on no journey. Second, style The author writes in simple sentences lacking color. Most paragraphs are comprised of one sentence. If you’re lucky there are two sentences in a paragraph. A few times in the book there are three or more sentences in a paragraph. The author’s attempt to use stylistic techniques usually reserved for superior authors comes across as poor writing. Third, grammar and mechanics The author seems to lack some basic knowledge of how to use quotation marks. There are several typographical errors that distract from the text. Fourth, the author uses some annoying techniques For example, the author (probably) shouldn’t use (probably) like she does numerous times. It (probably) looks like third grader confusion. Fifth, visual appeal The cover is great! Good title, good picture. Once you open the book you will see large font resembling that in a second grader’s book. The margins are large and the spaces between the single sentence paragraphs are large. There is lots of white space! There was clearly an attempt to make something short look longer. In conclusion, the book was a waste of a drive to the library and a waste of my time to read. The only good that could possibly come from my reading the book is that someone will read this review and decide not to waste their time and/or money on the book.
its a bit thinner than i was expecting and she repeats a lot of information.
Easy to read. User friendly language and just enough humour to make it an enjoyable read.
Really identified with a lot of what was written here and feel really refreshed to read something written by an asexual who is clear about not having to sacrifice this part of ourselves to make a relationship work. Really liked it!
I bought a used book of this, and it was in perfect condition. This book is absolutely amazing, if you're struggling with your identity and a sexuality I highly recommend this book. It gives you some great information about your identity cama in great information on how to help friends and family understand
